| Two of the great Christian apologists of our day have teamed up to respond to a plethora of biblical misinterpretations by cultic and aberrant sects. From Jehovah’s Witnesses to the New Age movement to Word-Faith teaching, Geisler and Rhodes tackle the abuses of Scripture by groups who appeal to the Bible as the origin and basis of their beliefs.
The pair surveys the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, singling out many predominant verses wrenched and contorted by cults. The format of the clothbound volume is common to Geisler’s previous and similar works (When Critics Ask and When Skeptics Ask). A key passage used by the cult is cited, an explanation of how the verse has been misinterpreted is given, and then solid hermeneutics for a proper understanding and correction of the misinterpretation are provided. Several entries contain the address or source where the erroneous interpretation is found in the cult’s own literature. Also, a handful of responses contain a referral to other Christian reference works where further commentary on the subject is found. Beyond its systematic layout, the volume is complete with “Scripture,” “Topical” and “Religious Groups” indexes making retrieval of information effortless. Avid readers of the pair’s previous individual writings will recognize echoes from their earlier works. Yet this comprehensive volume will be a tremendous asset in responding to those who irresponsibly handle the Word of God. |
